THE FORBIDDEN CITY IN MONACO——Imperial Court Life in China

In July of 2017, China Red Sandalwood Museum, the prime example of China red sandalwood culture, was invited to attend the national exhibition “THE FORBIDDEN CITY IN MONACO——Imperial Court Life in China”in Grimaldi Forum Monaco. Dr. Chan Laiwa, the Director of China Red Sandalwood Museum displayed two of her big well-collected red sandalwood models of “Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest in the Temple of Heaven”and “Pine and Cypress Pavilion”, together with other 255 remarkable exhibits from the Palace Museum and loans from major European and American collections, including the Musée Cernuschi and the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington etc. Focusing on the last imperial Chinese dynasty (1644–1911), this exhibition was a visual feast for visitors of its pomp and circumstance, its tastes and its grandeur.

 

 

With a celebration of the 22th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Monaco and China, this exhibition was jointly curated by this two countries on the theme of  imperial court life of Qing Dynasty. It was the first time of the China Red Sandalwood Museum to participate in such a big exhibition with other world-wide notable museums.

 

 

On July 14th, President Xi Jinping’s representative and Chinese ambassador to France and Monaco, Zhai Jun and H.S.H. Prince Albert II attended the opening ceremony together. Dr. Chan Laiwa herself explained to H.S.H. Prince Albert II and Mr. Zhai Jun the resource of red sandalwood, its carving arts and blend with imperial court culture. H.S.H. Prince Albert II nodded to praise and expressed gratitude for Dr. Chan Laiwa to demonstrate such supreme artistic exhibits, which let the people in France and Monaco closely appreciate and understand Chinese imperial court life and red sandalwood culture.

 

 

As one of the curators, Jean-Paul Desroches desired a long-term cooperation with Dr. Chan Laiwa to demonstrate the red sandalwood models of Siheyuan Courtyard, old Beijing City Gates, Corner Tower and other collections in China Red Sandalwood Museum in other countries and introduce Chinese red sandalwood culture to the world.

 

 

 

In accordance with the One Belt One Road Initiative, it was her dream to spread Chinese Red Sandalwood culture to the world as a member of the National Committee of CPPCC and inheritor of national intangible cultural heritage Red Sandalwood Carving Craft. It was a great honor and encouragement for her to be invited by Palace Museum and Monaco to display her collections in such a huge exhibition, which showed that the exhibits from the China Red Sandalwood Museum not only represented Chinese traditional culture, but also obtain the acceptance from the world, and she will continue to resolutely to bring the red sandalwood culture to all over the world.
