Red Sandalwood and Yinchen Wood Old Beijing City Gates Honored the 2nd China Forestry Industry Innovation Award(Rosewood Category)

In order to further implement the spirit of 19th National Congress of CPC and enhance the overall technical level of rosewood industry, authorized and empowered by Forestry Bureau of China, China Forestry Industry Association organized and reviewed the 2nd China Forestry Industry Innovation Award(Rosewood Category) so as to fully mobilize the enthusiasm and creativity of rosewood enterprises and promote technological progress of this industry. The project Red Sandalwood and Yinchen Wood Old Beijing City Gates applied by the China Red Sandalwood Museum was honored to get this award.

 

 

In 15th March, 2018, 2018 China (Zhong Shan)Rosewood Furniture Culture Exposition and the 2nd China Forestry Industry Innovation Award ceremony were successfully held in Rosewood Culture Expo City, Dayong, China. China forestry industry innovation award is one of the 9 awards belonging to the State Forestry Bureau that has clearly approved and reserved by the Correcting the Unhealthy Tendencies Office attached to the State Council.

The project Red Sandalwood and Yinchen Wood Old Beijing City Gates was led and guided by Madam Chan Laiwa, the 11th and 12th deputy director of Laison Office of Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan and Overseas Chinese of CPPCC, Chair-lady of Fuwah International Group and Curator of China Red Sandalwood Museum, as well as Mr. Chiu Yung, the Standing Committee of CPPCC Beijing Municipal and President of Fuwah International Group. With precious red sandalwood and Yinchen Wood and on a scale of 1:10, totally, it took six years to replicate these sixteen gates according to the original architectures in a princelple of Inside Nine and Outside Seven.

Ancient city of Beijing is a masterpiece of historical city complex of mankind. The image of City has become the spiritual backbone of Chinese nation and the cultural symbol of Chinese architecture, which drew the hearts of Chinese both at home and abroad. However, the ancient Beijing city walls almost disappeared in the last century and only a couple of city towers stood there lonely.  

In order to keep the roots and souls of ancient Beijing city, Madam Chan and Mr. Chiu Yung were determined to rebuild the city gates and walls.  They said they would make every effort to make the city gate models truly reproduce the original appearance of Beijing city gates and walls in Ming and Qing Dynasties despite its huge investment, making it a cultural treasure with high artistic and technical value,historical value as well as cultural relics value , that can be handed down to the world.

After years of data collection and research, detailed, authentic and accurate data had been obtained. Since 2010, Madam Chan had organized hundreds of masters, experts and artisans then started to rebuild the ancient Beijing city gates and walls on a scale of 1:10 with precious red sandalwood and Yinchen Wood. By the end of 2016, all the sixteen city gates including nine inners and seven outers had been finished.

Guests were appreciating the tenon and mortise structure in Chinese traditional furniture.

These sixteen models were made totally align with rules of ancient practice and their patterns were smooth and splendid. In the production process, Madam Chan and Mr. Chiu often supervised on site and she was even in workshop herself extending to details of every replica. She said, her architectural models should be appreciated by common people, but also judged by experts. Therefore she went to her workshop everyday to instruct the artisans and discussed technical problems with professionals.

For example, some uncertainty issues in traditional architectures building process, like the upturned eaves and curved tiles, she decided to make them in a way of computer-control technology. Especially, in the absence of reference conditions, the thousand-pound metal block was restored   which was pulled down in from of the outer door to defend against enemy in wars; The small animal ornaments on ridges were tally coincide with every detail of the originals with the help of Numerical Control Technology, which even corrected several mistakes in documents. The accomplishment of these sixteen models were not only a piece of exquisite artwork, but also academic achievements in city planning and architecture, which would leave valuable and complete Beijing city gates, drawings and technical materials to our future generations.
