Chan LaiWa's Dream of the Gate of Beijing Book Launch At Jianfu Hall of Palace Museum on 11th June

The first publication ceremony in both Chinese and English version of the book Chan LaiWa's Dream of the Gate of Beijing was held in Jianfu Hall of Palace Museum on 11th June. This book is jointly edited and published by the Beijing Red Sandalwood Culture Foundation and the Forbidden City Press, which chronicles the China Red Sandal Museum Curator  Chan LaiWas incredible story of spending more than a decade, adopting precious material , and employing state-level intangible cultural heritage as sandalwood carving techniques to reappear its magnificence and  heavy history of the old Beijing city and gates. The opening ceremony was hosted by famous presenter Bai Yansong. 97-year-old expert in the cultural heritage industry, Honorary President of the Chinese Heritage Society as well as member of the Expert Committee of the Chinese Historical and Cultural City Xie Chensheng ; deputy chairman and secretary general of the National Art Fund, former Deputy Minister of Culture Zhao Shaohua; Director of the Palace Museum Shan Jixiang together with Chan Laiwa, curator of the Chinese Red Sandalwood Museum unveiled the new book during the ceremony. He Luli, former vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics sent special congratulatory messages for the success of this event.

Shan Jixiang,Curator of the National Palace Museum, Jean-Paul Desroches Director of the French National Cultural Heritage, Paula Wallace,President of the Savannah College of Art and Design,Wang Bo,Vice President of Peking University, Du Pengfei,Director of Art Museum of Tsinghua University,Rong Yang, Chairman of the Beijing Overseas Chinese Association,Li Changyuan deputy director of Foreign Affairs Office of Beijing ,Guan Yu deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture, Chi Chungsui, Chairman of the Beijing Red Sandal Culture Foundation, Yan Chongnian, a famous historian,  Liu Dake, a famous ancient architecture expert, Zhou Zhengsheng, President of China Arts and Crafts Association,Li Jianping, President of Beijing History Research Association , Wang Zhongjie,ancient architecture & polychrome painting expert from National Palace Museum Research Institute, Hu Linqing,photographer of the Book, Hou Kaiyuan  senior photographer of Beijing Institute of Architectural Design  etc. Totally, there were more than 100 celebrities and guests attended the launch ceremony and multiple guests delivered brief remarks as well.  

After the unveiling ceremony, Curator Shan Jixiang, Curator Chan Laiwa, and Chiu Yung, President of Fuwah International Group, and Zhao Li, Director of Fuwah International Group, jointly presented the book to Peking University, Tsinghua University Art Museum, as well as French National Cultural Heritage Director Jean-Paul Desroches and  President and founder of the Savannah College of Art and Design in the United States Paula Wallace respectively. Song Mingyuan, the founder of the Chinese Marine Painting School, presented the long scroll poem to curator Chan Laiwa which was specially written for her.

The dream of curator Chan Laiwa is actually a common dream of people who inherit Chinese culture. As director of the French National Cultural Heritage Jean-Paul Desroches mentioned in his speech By researching photos and other three-dimensional image data, Madam Chan Laiwa directed the program personally and finally realized of the replication of Beijing's gates, besides the reconstruction model of ancient gates, Madam Chan Laiwa also has made other ancient models, such as the architecture model of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, one of them is now standing proudly in the lobby of the National Museum, and another one was presented to the French government by Madam Chan Laiwa in 2005. According to the instructions of President Chirac at that time, it was placed in Chateau de Chambord which was designed and built by DaVinci in 1530.  It should be mentioned here that by the end of 2019, another one will be placed grandly in the center of the new Hengqin Red Sandalwood Museum, which is adjacent to Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong. Madam Chan Laiwa has made tremendous contributions to the historical memory of ancient architecture in China, especially in the process of urbanization that China currently faces.Today we must remember this cultural heritage, so that the intrinsic cultural quality can be passed to future generations.

The famous historian Yan Chongnian said in his speech The Book has both Chinese and English versions. It spans time, place, ethnicity, and religion, and has great merit in spreading and promoting Chinese traditional culture.

As Shan Yaoxiang,curator of the Palace Museum referred: We are sincerely grateful to curator Chan Laiwa and all craftsmen and colleagues who support this project, thank you for your love of the Palace Museum culture and the heritage of Chinese traditional culture. I am deeply touched. I will also fulfil my duty and work harder to protect the cultural heritage of the Forbidden City so that it can be integrated into the present society and make greater contributions to the great rejuvenation of our Chinese culture."

Paula Wallace, President of Savannah College of Art and Design in the United States mentioned these gates of Beijing are more than a replica of the original city gates, they are portals from today to the past, so that the lessons and labors of history can be known and celebrated long into the future. Her work has united the bright and happy future of China with its noble past.In recognition of Madame Chans contribution to the international dissemination of red sandalwood culture and art for many years, president Paula  presented Trustee Emeritus of SCAD to Madame Chan. While Madame Chan presented a portrait painted by Qiu Yi and Qiu Yue to President Paula. The friendship between China and the United States enjoys a long history, and the artistic exchanges reopen new chapters.

In the launching ceremony, Chan Laiwa,chairwoman of Fuwah International Group and curator of China Red Sandalwood Museum, as well as Chiu Yung, president of Fuwah International Group expressed their gratitude to all friends supporting the program all the way of rebuilding the old Beijing City Gate by employing the precious Red Sandalwood 

After the opening ceremony, the guests also boarded Yanchun Pavilion of the National Palace Museum and visited a picture exhibition specially held for the Book Launch.
