Latvian Former President Mrs. Vaira Vike-Freiberga and Her Accompanists Paid a Visit to China Red Sandalwood Museum

On the 26th of Jun., accompanied by the President of Chinese Peoples Institute of Foreign Affairs Mr. Wu Hailong and the Co-Chairman of Nizama International Center, Latvian Former President Mrs. Vaira Vike-Freiberga and her husband Mr. Imants Freibergs paid a visit to China Red Sandalwood Museum. The Curator Mrs. Chan Laiwa and the Deputy Curator Mr. Chi Chongrui warmly welcomed the visitors at the entrance of the museum, Deputy Curator of Zhuhai Fu Wah Red Sandalwood Museum Miss. Zhao Ziwei presented bouquet to Mrs. Freiberga.

The Former President Mrs. Freiberga was born in Riga, Latvia in 1937 and she moved to Canada with her parents while she was 8 years old. Being familiar with many languages, Mrs. Freiberga is a linguist, psychologist and Doctor of experimental psychology who had been engaged as a college professor. In 1999, she had been elected as the first female president in Latvia and been reelected in 2003. During her tenure of office, The Iron Lady of the Baltic Sea illustrated well her strong governing features.


Curator Chan Laiwas personal accompanied the guests from 1st to 3rd floor of the museum, with great interest Former President Mrs. Freiberga and her husband visited all kinds of items on the display which are made of red sandalwood and Huanghuali wood. They also experienced the replicated Hall of Mental Cultivation which was the study and living room for Chinese emperors in Qing Dynasty, and the traditional Chinese wedding chamber. When Former President Mrs. Freiberga looked at the exhibit,  They are so beautiful, here must be the well-deserved, best and largest museum of artwork of red sandalwood furniture in the world, it is incredible!, said Former President Mrs. Freiberga. And when she set her eyes on the traditional wedding chamber with the antique beauty, she mentioned that next year it would mark her 60th wedding anniversary. Later on the couple took a number of photos in front of the wedding chamber, sincerely hoping by the time they looking through the photos full of China charm, they can renew their enjoyable experience.  


After paying a visit to the museum, Curator Chan Laiwa treated Former president Mrs. Freiberga and her husband cordially by serving the classic Chinese pastry, afterwards host and guests had a friendly conversation.

Former president Mrs. Freiberga said that it was mind blowing to see all the wood-carving collection which Curator Chan Laiwa had made and collected during the past decades. It was an unforgettable experience to meet with Curator Chan Laiwa and have such an opportunity to admire these magnificent collection. When Former president Mrs. Freiberga asked Curator Chan Laiwa about where the Inspiration of designing such a large-scale sandalwood project came from, Curator answered : Because I was born in Manchuria, the Yellow Flag Family. So From what Ive constantly seen and heard as I grew up,I was deeply influenced by the culture of red sandalwood furniture and utensil . When I was young , I was determined to spread the red sandalwood culture after I grew up. It has been 44 years since I started my career for red sandalwood project, and the total amount of the furniture will not be less than 10 thousands. Curator Chan Laiwa cordially proposed that Mrs. Freiberga should bring all her family members to visit the museum next time.

After watching the documentary of Curator Chan Laiwa spending decade on restoring the Old Beijing City Gates which are made of red sandalwood and Yin Chen wood, Mrs. Freiberga gave the comments saying : Dear Curator, there is nothing comparable to the contribution that youve made to the Chinese culture and art, and it is also the contribution to the world culture. Over the past few decades, youve spent a tremendous amount of money on saving the Chinese Palace woodcarving art as well as inheriting and developing this woodcarving art. Through your persistent hard work, youve cultivated a large number of skilled craftsmen. This spirit of cultivation and morality is of great value.


Curator Chan Laiwa said : Warmly welcome Former president Mrs.Freiberga to visit China Red Sandalwood Museum, thank you for your compliment and encouragement. Friends from all over the world are warmly welcome to visit China Red Sandalwood Museum and love our traditional art. I would like to invite you genuinely to pay a visit to the museum again whenever it is possible for you.
